The INTO Heritage in
Schools Scheme offers a panel of Heritage Specialists who,
at the request of staff, visit a primary school to work
directly with the children. Specialists' expertise range
from bats to whales, from Vikings to the history of bread,
from story telling to traditional dance, and from charcoal
making to military heritage.
The specialists' knowledge of
local heritage enhances the young people's appreciation of
their surroundings and all have been trained to communicate
effectively with children, their spontaneity and enthusiasm
for their subject makes the visits a very appealing
educational experience for both pupils and teachers.
Local visual artist Mary Wallace conducted a five week
workshop with 3rd – 6th Classes, immediately following the
Easter break. Mary has a special interest in working with
children in the area of artistic and cultural heritage and
was the ideal choice to supplement the work done in this
area over the last two years as part of our Comenius /
Léargas project.
Mary offered the students the opportunity to investigate and
experience our heritage through different media. Working
collaboratively with teachers on project work within the
Visual Art and SESE areas of the curriculum our national
heritage was explored - from the multicoloured locks of
Cúchulainn, Boyne Valley carvings, illuminated manuscripts,
high crosses to paintings by Leech or Yeats; or the wealth
of resources in your locality - history, myths, legends,
Vikings, Normans, walled towns, castles, monastic
settlements, nature reserves and more.
