Click on any of the "pencils" labeled "location" at the top
of any page to find out where the village of Newbawn is. Once
you have found the village, drive through the street and the
school is beside the Post Office.
Currently SHNS has 130 pupils divided into five classes. There
is a full time Resource teacher and a full time Learning Support
Teacher. We have one part-time SNA,one secretary and a cleaner.
This year (2011-2012) the classes are divided into Junior
Infants,
Senior Infants, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th, and 5th & 6th. However
this situation fluctuates from year to year and in all
probability the class make-up will be different for 2012-2013.
Yes. SHNS is a mixed school and all classes are mixed too.
Yes, the children wear a uniform comprising of a light blue
shirt/blouse/t-shirt with a grey jumper/cardigan and a grey
trousers or skirt or a navy blue tracksuit. Our school tracksuit
is available from Wallace's of Wellingtonbridge.
School starts at 09.20 and ends at 15.00. There is a
mid-morning break from 10.55 - 11.05 and lunch is from 12.30 -
13.00. Most children will have a small snack at the 10.55 break
and take a packed lunch at 12.30.
Children must not be
on the school grounds before 09.10 and after 15.05.
The SHNS Policy on Homework is available by clicking on
"HOMEWORK."
Yes, but like most places we could do better. Milk cartons
and paper are our mainly recycled. However the amount of rubbish
generated from packed lunches continues to be a problem. Food
waste in composted.
There are also units in the school for recycling batteries,
mobile phones and ink cartridges
Every toilet in the school has been fitted with a "cistern
blocker" to cut down on the amount of water used each day.
There is also a Clothes Recycling facility and a Bottle Bank
in the village in the church car-park.
PE Day is at the discretion of the class teacher. Children
will be informed at the start of the year about when PE takes
pace. Often outside coaches come to the school for tag Rugby and
GAA, thus PE day might change. For the past few years, Ann-Marie
Cooney, a well known Dance Teacher has been taking all classes
for Dance. This is an integral part of the PE Curriculum and
this year takes place on Thursdays.
Despite the lack of facilities the children partake in many
sports. We have Tag-Rugby and GAA Coaching for boys and girls,
where outside experts from the IRFU and Wexford GAA CO. Board
teach the children. These coaching sessions are considered part
of the yearly PE programme and participation is expected from
boys and girls together.. camogie, rounders and soccer, while
the boys play hurling, football, rounder and soccer.

Many of the children travel to SHNS by
car. There is also a private bus and a state
bus.

While the emphasis in SHNS has always been
on participation and fun, nonetheless the school takes part in
Sports Competitions.
Together with our neighbouring schools of
Raheen N.S. and Adamstown N.S., the school takes part in Boys
Hurling and Football, ladies football and camogie. On our own SHNS has
competed in INTO Mini-Sevens in Boys Hurling and Football and
Girls Football. The school takes part in a County Rounders
Competition as well as a Tag Rugby Blitz every year.Boys and
Girls teams are also entered into the FAI Ribena Soccer
Competition.
The school enjoys good relations with many
local sporting and leisure organisations and their information /
news is regularly passed on through the school.
Yes, the school operates a Book Rental
Scheme and details of this are sent home each September.
Each class has a small "in-class" library. The Parents'
Council are in the process of setting up a Library in the
portacabin and after many years seeking inclusion on a route,
the Co. County Mobile Library visits the school every second
Thursday and it is a wonderful resource for all in Newbawn.
SHNS was one of the first primary schools to have state of
the art wireless broadband installed. 6th Class have their own
set of Laptops, each classroom (including Resource Rooms) has at
least one computer and all classes have
inter-active whiteboards.
Yes it does, but participation is voluntary. Pupils can buy
Post Office Savings stamps (costing €1 each) from Mrs. Davey on
Monday mornings.
