Science Day in WIT - 2005
On Tuesday 15th of November 2005 fifth and
sixth class went on a science tour to W.I.T Campus at
College Street Waterford. It was to do with space. The
staff and members of the Armagh Planetarium came to
W.I.T with some exhibitions. First we went into a big
blue dome which was supported by a large fan. Even our
teacher had to go in! When you went in it was very
dark.
There was an instructor who turned on a projector.
It showed us all the planets and what they look like
up close. When we were finished that,we went on to
stars and how they can join up to make a shape. These
are some shapes we saw Orion, Pisces, Capricorn, Great
Dog, Little Dog, The Plough and The North Star. As you
might know some of them are star-signs.
Just as we were going the instructor showed us how
to find our way home in the dark. She told us The
North Star never moved and to find it you just had to
find a shape that looked like A Plough and move five
spaces down and you’ll be at it. [If you count right.]
Then she whizzed the stars around and it made us
dizzy.
When we got out of the dome we went to a talk. There
was a different instructor giving the talk. His talk
was all about magnets, electricity and static
electricity. First he called up a girl and rubbed a
balloon on her hair, then got a tin and without
touching the tin he put the balloon in front of the
tin and the tin moved! That was called static
electricity. Then he told us about real electricity
and how you could die from poking something into a
socket. If you ever see anyone doing something
dangerous with a plug or a socket never hang on to
them as you too could get a shock instead you could
give them a shoulder as it would knock them away from
the source of the electric shock. It could save their
life. Then the instructor explained to us how magnets
and robots work. The robots were run by light and
solar power. When that talk was over it was time to go
back to the bus. It was a very educational day.
